S.C. GRANDEMAR S.A. holds a special place amongst the producers of building materials in Romania. Its quarries are placed in the centre of Transylvania where the bases of industrial extraction and processing of building stone were established: beginning with 1873 by opening Poieni Quarry under private patronage.

Poieni quarry was the first of the quarries to be endowed with elements of industrial technique and technology within the field of stone extraction and processing such as: compressed-air drilling and mechanical shattering by crushing the rock. Since that year and until present time, the mining activities in the area developed continuously, new quarries being opened: Bologa, Morlaca, Valea Drăganului and others. The rocks in the region have special characteristics which confer a great quality to the quarry products. These meet permanently the quality standards requested by the railways or the road builders. Over the years, the quarries had successively different types of organization or administration but Cluj has always remained the administrative centre to influence the economical, financial and technological activity of this sub-branch.

Based on Governmental Decision No. 93/1991, the industrial unit transformed into a joint-stock company, taking the name of GRANDEMAR S.A. Beginning with 1997, the main shareholder was the Dutch company BLOEM INTERNATIONAL B.V. Another important shareholder is the building company, STRABAG Hungaria Epito Kft..

Although the retechnologization process of the company began in 1997, the years 2001 and 2006 represented investment climaxes of our company: Poieni quarry (2001), Bologa quarry (2006) and Moigrad quarry (2010) were provided with complete, professional, heavy-duty crushing-granulating-sorting equipment, supplied by world-wide leaders in the field of machinery for the extractive industry, like Sandvik Rock Processing and Metzo Minerals.

GRANDEMAR has implemented and certified a quality, environmental and safety and health at work Integrated Management System according to requirements of SR EN ISO 9001:2008, SR EN ISO 14001:2005, and SR EN ISO 45001:2023 standards in the field of Extraction of building and ornamental stone, limestone, gypsum, chalk, slate (building stone, crushed sand, chipping) B 0811.

The commodity market of the quarry products is made up of clients in the railway maintenance, repair and construction field within the Romanian National Railway Company of Cluj and the neighbouring area and the ones from the maintenance network of regional and national roads. As a market segment, GRANDEMAR holds almost supremacy in Transylvania, but the stone quality made our company a strong competitor in the regions of Banat and Oltenia, too.

Powerful clients were and still are the big companies executing rehabilitation of national roads within the Rehabilitation Program of National Roads in Romania initiated in 1991 by the Romanian Government and cofinanced by loan agreements concluded with international financial institutions like the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the European Investment Bank. The main objective of these works was to improve the infrastructure in transports and the traffic conditions with the observance of European norms. During 1993-2004, the clients of Grandemar were the big construction companies: Itinera Com. Edile, Consorzio Pontello Tirrena Scavi S.p.A, Consorzio Federici-Astaldi-Todini (Italy), Prodeftiki (Greece), SCT Bucharest, Contransimex (Romania), which performed road rehabilitation in the regions of Transylvania, Banat and Oltenia.

The year 2006 marked a new beginning in the activity our company has. The real beginning of the works for Braşov-Borş motorway by the American corporation Bechtel meant for Grandemar a time of maximum development. The position and the big production capacity our company has would make GRANDEMAR the main aggregate supplier for at least half of the motorway length.

Beginning with 2007, the big projects for developing the Romanian infrastructure in the North-Western region brought Grandemar the growth and affirmation so long expected. Big projects such as construction of the Transylvania motorway, rehabilitation of the national road section Cluj – Bistrita – Suceava, construction of the bypass roads of Cluj-Napoca Town, the big commercial and business centres in Cluj, the industrial parks; rehabilitation or even building entirely the streets in Cluj. And last but not least the modernization of Cluj-Napoca Airport.

Considering the rehabilitation or construction of roads as a priority and the main means of achieving the economic objectives our country has committed to, as well as the fact that Romanian infrastructure is a priority for Europe, we hope that in the near future considerable funds will be allocated to the development of road and rail infrastructure.
